Creativity certainly runs before. I wanted Ankara...yet something different, something vivid, alive, something authentic, a reminder of Africa. Set an intention and bring a bold vision to life – I wanted my own design patterns on fabric!! Why not? How could I do that? How dare I think I could? I had lost 3 teeth from my detangling brush during wash day. Where are those big wooden pick combs Iya Oloka (Paternal Great Grand Ma) used to place o so delicately on her side table? They were wide tooth combs, spaced out to work with my nappy curls and coils. There are No where....not here with me in soon to be cold, grey New Jersey and neither did I see one the last time I was in Nigeria.
Are wooden combs the prehistoric dinosaurs of combs?
So, I had to recall what I could of those rich, African hardwood combs. I put pen to paper and started sketching (never sketched before in my life)...
There was something about the Wooden combs – Not only did it bring back memories of my grand mother and great grand mother; the combs also held Its own beauty, character, strength. So, I had to share and transform sketches to products – The conception of A'Maze Africa.
I hope you enjoy all our creations. Welcome to A'Maze Africa where Africa meets the West and we showcase t
